The Budapest Open Access Initiative arises from a small but lively meeting convened in Budapest by the Open Society Institute (OSI) on December 1-2, 2001. The purpose of the meeting was to accelerate progress in the international effort to make research articles in all academic fields freely available on the internet. The participants represented many points of view, many academic disciplines, and many nations, and had experience with many of the ongoing initiatives that make up the open access movement. In Budapest they explored how the separate initiatives could work together to achieve broader, deeper, and faster success.

《大英簡明百科》的母本是大英百科全書公司於2002年推出的英文《Britannica Concise Encyclopedia》紙本書，該書以內容精簡著稱，符合數位時代快速獲得資訊和以言簡易賅的方式了解知識的特性。經由大英百科全書台灣分公司的編輯部翻譯後，加上原先的英文內容，共約七百五十萬的中英對照的內文。由於在翻譯過程中，會根據時勢情況及大英百科全文版修訂內容加以修正，並依據中文陳述習慣稍加改寫，因此並非百分之百直譯。本資料庫除了將原有的圖文資料轉換成為數位內容之外，並提供全文檢索、分類檢索、中文檢索、外文檢索、注音檢索、筆劃檢索、漢語及通用拼音、地圖、年表、圖片等檢索和瀏覽的方式，另外亦提供內文超連結的功能，和人、事、時、地、物的延伸閱讀，可有效建構個人完整的知識架構。

Web of Science (簡稱 WOS) 為美國 Thomson Scientific 於 1997 年間建置之網路版引用文獻索引資料庫系統，提供各學科領域之文獻書目、作者摘要、及引用文獻等資料。本資料庫特有之文獻間相互引用關係檢索，不但提供研究人員更完整之研究參考資訊，更可依循前人研究軌跡，進一步瞭解同儕及競爭對手之研究。收錄科學技術類期刊計6,700 餘種，涵蓋主題約 150 餘種。收錄社會科學類期刊計2,000 餘種，亦從近 3,300 種科技類期刊中挑選相關資料收錄，涵蓋主題約 50 餘種。
